Arawang Primary School (ACT) Priority Enrolment Area (Catchment)

I am so in love with ACT Department of Education, their classification of school zoning is so easy to following. It is just follow the suburb boundaries most of the time. This certainly makes mapping job ten times easier compare to what I had to work in a lot of instance. ACT and Canberra suburb boundaries are also well defined compare to other capital cities I am working with, so this also helps.

Anyhow enough rambling, today we got Arawang Primary School Priority Enrolment Area to present to your guys.

Amaroo Primary School (ACT) Priority Enrolment Area and how I create catchment map for schools

This entry is for the Priority Enrolment Area (PET) for Amaroo Primary School in the ACT. I will also show how I create the maps as well and thought this may be a fun one to follow. The process is out of date now, but I left it here as it is a historical record of what I have done in the past. For accuracy, please refer and use the map below instead.

Please note each Australian State has a different education system and way of showing the school zone catchment information. ACT has a centralized page describing the corresponding PET for each school. There is also an excellent Allhomes map, however, you cannot search it easily and I found it somewhat clunky to use as well.

ACT Department of Education description, please note the left is the school name and right is the suburb that it is covering.

Amaroo School DET Description

Allhomes map, this has very good detail and can zoom in and out.

I use Google Maps to create my maps and following is the normal procedure I follow.

Geolocate the school in question

Checked the Suburb boundaries that was listed on the ACT Department of Education website.

School Parenting Experience Entry #2 (First Term Summary)

I regret that I had not through about document this experience earlier. However that being said, better later than never I guess. First term for the first few weeks, I basically tried to teach my son how to read and pronounce letters and do the daily book reading. I was and still do the daily book reading for my son every day, he enjoys them greatly.

He got handed his first set of sight words which is called Golden Words. This is a set of twelve words together consist twenty five percent of total English words used. I had a lot of trouble help him through this set of words. Pretty sure it took me about four or five weeks before he remembered them. The second set got twenty words in them, despite more words this set was much easier for me. This set took my son about three weeks to pass the test. The third set was called blue words and consisted of only ten words. This took me about one week to teach my son, however he had not got a chance to get it tested with his teacher. So with the onset of school holiday, I have started teaching his Green words which is a set of twenty words. This set feels harder for me and may took me a while and I will try to get it learnt before school starts back up again. For comparison most of kids in his class are already towards end of twelve word set before the conclusion of first school term.

Also every week students in the class will have their turn to present an item called news week. This could be their favorite lullabies, what festival they celebrate etc. There are also other activities like Easter Parade etc as well which is fun for both students and parents to attend. There are also weekly assembly meeting which students gets present awards they have received, I have attended a few, these are pretty good as well. Often they will have various of performance such as music bands etc as well. My wife and I usual taking turning attending the events where possible, both of us work full time so it is about the best compromise that we could make.

School Parenting Experience Entry #1 (Introduction)

I have two school age children currently enrolled in one of the public school in Upper North Shore Sydney area. The elder one is in year 2 and young one just started Kindergarten. My wife handled most of after school parenting relating to the education aspect for my eldest children. With my youngest who is a boy entered into Kindergarten, I have been handling his after school educations.

I think what I will do is blog about what I have done and progress every few days or whenever there is important events happening. This entry will be an introduction and just going over the background.

First it is very common in the North Shore area for the parents to hold back their children one year to enter the school even if they already met the entrance age requirement. My son’s birth is close to the to middle of the year and we did not choose to delay the schooling, he is by far the youngest in his whole class.

My children’s experience with Kindergarten is that school concentrate on their reading, writing and oral, primarily English skills. There are also many other activities, like painting, computer class etc. There are usually English for second language (ESL) teachers in Sydney public schools that after assessment when entering school, he or she maybe placed into additional ESL classes to reinforce their English skills. My son is doing two one hour ESL class each week.

With Kindergarten the pattern goes learning the sight words, starting from Golden to Lemon words, in total twelve sets. This is accompanying by incrementally more complex daily book reading. What I will do is to try and keep a sort of progress report on this. I am sure I am missing some stuff, but the details should improve once I start with better record keeping.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT) School Catchment

I am slowly expanding the school catchment to all parts of Australia. I thought today I will explore ACT and take your guys alone with it. First and foremost, Google search, the search return shows that ACT Department of Education has a fair decent information on their website regarding the school catchment. First the terminology and not a surprise ACT got a different name for the school catchment, it calls them Priority Enrolment Area(PEA). Why the bureaucrats in each states coming up completely different way of describing same thing is beyond me.

Interesting part looking at description of PEA, it seems the school catchment pretty conform with the suburb boundaries. This is not something been done that I have seen in the other states so far. The suburb boundaries generally plays very little role on school catchment from what I seen so far.

Also Allhomes has a very decent map of the schools zone in their advanced mapping section. The map is not very searchable from what I see, but this is probably not a big a deal with the limited number of schools in ACT.

Random Post on Android Marshmallow Issues I had to resolve after upgrade to it

My Motorola phone recently received upgrade to Android Marshmallow 6.0 and I opt to upgrade straightway. Pretty much directly after upgrade, I am starting to having problem with the phone.

  1. My phone was not connecting to the computer anymore when I plugged it in via using USB cable.
  2. The phone keeps showing message that Google Play Service require update and because my play store is not working, I could not do that.
  3. I was not able to connect to the Play Store it keeps returning connection time out error. (This issue most likely not related to the update, but happened at same time and compounded my dilemma greatly.)

As I end up spend a few days before sorting all these issue, I feel the need to write this down and share with everyone. So it may help some random people searching on Google and save them some major hassle.

The first problem is the easiest to resolve, after quick research it shows that Google changed how connection behavior works with connecting the phone to the computer via the USB cable. It is now defaulted to charging only, you will have to slide down the top menu and select the usb connection message, then choose the MTP option shows up afterwards. This will let the phone connect to the computer via MTP mode.

The second problem is a bit of bugger, because the phone is not able to connect to the Google Play Store, it is not able to update the Google Play Service app and apps that rely on this may not work. When you click on the message and try to update, it just bring you to the Play Store, because my third issue of not able to connect to it, the update fails and I am just stuck in a loop.

The third issue, that I keep getting connection time out and retry message when opening up Google Play Store. I checked and double checked my internet connection and everything worked fine without issue except Google Play Store. The problem is an Android Phone may as well be semi bricked if you cannot access the Play Store. I started searching on Google, there are a tonnes of advice, most of them by varies of Indian bloggers and essentially copying each other’s article, with resetting the store app cache etc and finally lead up to factory reset the phone.

I have no real important data on the phone but did not feel the problem justify a factory reset yet. So I keep researching for a solution. After whole bunch of resetting app data, side installing the latest Play Store etc. The Store is still not working for me and I was getting annoyed to say the least, I could have really spend the time on something useful rather than wasted on this. I charged one of my old phone and was getting the exact same issue, so at this stage I finally thought since everything else is working, why not try with Google’s own DNS. So I redid my wifi connection settings and put Google’s DNS server 8.8.8.8 into it, everything pretty much worked straightway.

So if you having connection time out retry with Google Play Store and everything else worked fine internet wise, please try changing your DNS server to the Google’s own and try. It worked wonders for me and could very well save you complete trashing your phone by factory reset.
