Quoting directly from Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), NAPLAN means the following.
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials.
ACARA
NAPLAN in layman’s term is a set of standardised tests for English language and math skills. Because the tests are standardised, it is possible to measure and cross compare schools. However one needs to be very careful when using the data, there are many factors which can contribute to the difference in the score.
What is more important is that it allow the school and authority to track how well schools are doing compared to their peer and historically. It also allows the tracking of the student’s performance as well and allows measurement on how much they have improved as well.
What needs to be stressed is that this particular test is only designed to measure and track student’s performance and improvements over the years. However, it is not any part of school entrance etc. I am aware of some private school uses NAPLAN results as part of their selection criteria.
We are about to hit NAPLAN season with the 2019 tests to be hosted between 10th to 24th of May. Please do not make a big thing of out of this and have fun showing off your child’s result or not :).
