Top 100 Ranking Western Australia Perth Primary Schools For The Year Of 2015 (Government/Public)

Top ranking Western Australia Perth primary schools (Government/Public) for the year of 2015. The result is a combination of both year 3 and 5 numbers from NAPLAN. One thing to note is some schools listed have very low enrolment number so the result is possibly not a reliable reflection of the entire school’s performance and historically can have big fluctuations as well. This is why I also included the enrolment number here, some school got big enrolment number as well due to they are classified as combined with both primary and secondary components counted together. One more thing to note is that percentage is based on the number one primary school regardless of school sector Australia wide. Just so to be clear that particular school is Sydney Grammar School – Edgecliff Preparatory School and it is so far ahead of everybody else and is a bit of anomaly. Just about everybody else government or non-government pretty close together.

Random Post on Android Marshmallow Issues I had to resolve after upgrade to it

My Motorola phone recently received upgrade to Android Marshmallow 6.0 and I opt to upgrade straightway. Pretty much directly after upgrade, I am starting to having problem with the phone.

  1. My phone was not connecting to the computer anymore when I plugged it in via using USB cable.
  2. The phone keeps showing message that Google Play Service require update and because my play store is not working, I could not do that.
  3. I was not able to connect to the Play Store it keeps returning connection time out error. (This issue most likely not related to the update, but happened at same time and compounded my dilemma greatly.)

As I end up spend a few days before sorting all these issue, I feel the need to write this down and share with everyone. So it may help some random people searching on Google and save them some major hassle.

The first problem is the easiest to resolve, after quick research it shows that Google changed how connection behavior works with connecting the phone to the computer via the USB cable. It is now defaulted to charging only, you will have to slide down the top menu and select the usb connection message, then choose the MTP option shows up afterwards. This will let the phone connect to the computer via MTP mode.

The second problem is a bit of bugger, because the phone is not able to connect to the Google Play Store, it is not able to update the Google Play Service app and apps that rely on this may not work. When you click on the message and try to update, it just bring you to the Play Store, because my third issue of not able to connect to it, the update fails and I am just stuck in a loop.

The third issue, that I keep getting connection time out and retry message when opening up Google Play Store. I checked and double checked my internet connection and everything worked fine without issue except Google Play Store. The problem is an Android Phone may as well be semi bricked if you cannot access the Play Store. I started searching on Google, there are a tonnes of advice, most of them by varies of Indian bloggers and essentially copying each other’s article, with resetting the store app cache etc and finally lead up to factory reset the phone.

I have no real important data on the phone but did not feel the problem justify a factory reset yet. So I keep researching for a solution. After whole bunch of resetting app data, side installing the latest Play Store etc. The Store is still not working for me and I was getting annoyed to say the least, I could have really spend the time on something useful rather than wasted on this. I charged one of my old phone and was getting the exact same issue, so at this stage I finally thought since everything else is working, why not try with Google’s own DNS. So I redid my wifi connection settings and put Google’s DNS server 8.8.8.8 into it, everything pretty much worked straightway.

So if you having connection time out retry with Google Play Store and everything else worked fine internet wise, please try changing your DNS server to the Google’s own and try. It worked wonders for me and could very well save you complete trashing your phone by factory reset.

Brief Explanation on Sydney High School Catchment Zone

The Sydney high school catchment map is about to get very funky, so I figure it is time to do a quick run down on different type of government/state high schools and its impact on the school catchment.

There are roughly four different type of secondary level government/state schools.

  1. Selective High School
  2. Girls High School
  3. Boys High School
  4. Coed High School

Selective high schools does not have specific catchment so they do not need to be taken into account when creating the map. Girls and Boys high school generally tend to have mirrored school, for example Homebush Boys and Strathfield Girls High School. These schools will have very similar catchment zones as well. Another thing is area that are under the catchment of girls and boys high schools will always be zoned for another coed high school as well. So what this means is that some address can be zoned for up to three different school.

What this also create is some really disjointed school catchments, for example refer to the St Ives High School Catchment Map that I have created yesterday. There are two distinctively separate catchment zone.

It is really hard to try accommodate three different type school catchment in one single map, even with different layers, the over lapping catchments will end up very difficult to work out. I will most likely do different map for girls, boys and coed high schools.

Advantage and Disadvantage of Multi-lingual

I recently this article “No advantage to being multi-lingual, Australian study finds” on SMH. This is another interesting one, as Australia and particular Sydney is traditionally immigrant country, just matter of when. There is also a very diverse origin of where the migrants came from. This makes sporting match fun as there is always supporters for whoever is playing and multi-lingual matter of fact for many children.

So this topic is certainly of much interest to many, the basic finding in the article is that being multi-lingual offers no advantage and disadvantage academically. This I agree with myself, provide the person in question is proficient in English, it is certainly case for all my friends. This in my experience generally holds true for kids who come before high school, for the older kids they tend to suffer a little with the humanitarian subjects which is not surprising.

Whilst being multi-lingual offers no advantage academically, it certainly offers a lot of advantages later on in your life. A couple of my friends secured excellent jobs with promising career due to their multi-lingual skills, these are positions they would have never secured without the proficiency in other languages.

For many children of immigrants in Australia, speaking the same language as their parents offers the closeness in relationship sometimes very difficult to achieve otherwise. I also had friends that never mastered the mother tongue that their parents spoke and because the limited English skill the parents command, the home conversation often limited to what I call “kitchen talk”. This is limited to day to day thing, like what you done today, what we having for dinner etc. However discussion of news topic, deeper discussions etc are all next to impossible.
